Finding The Perfect Jeans – Chicks in the Change-Room March-2020 Edition
And so it begins…
This month on ‘Chicks in the Change-Room’ we are on the hunt for the perfect pair of jeans for the Autumn/Winter/Spring seasons ahead.
This post, I will admit, I am not looking forward to. I am not a jeans girl. I have an hourglass figure, which means I have a waist and hips.
‘Hips’ I have found over the years, do not like jeans. They simply do not get on. In fact, ‘Hips’ tend to have a full-blown tantrum at the sight of the confining-diva-denim. ‘Hips’ prefer a pair of well-cut trousers in a softer fabric or flowing pant legs.
In recent years, the skinny-leg jean has emerged as the ‘Queen of the Jean Revolution’ and ‘Hips’ and I are not fans. Neither for that matter, are ‘Calves’.
‘Calves’ and skinny-jeans are definitely not friends, they have been acquainted and trust me, it did not go down well. ‘Calves’ have tried hopelessly to befriend skinny-jeans these past few years, only to be squeezed, pushed, and rejected to the point where they eventually conceded- under pressure, after desperately trying to fit in. They have generally ignored the presence of each other since.
So you can imagine when ‘The Girls’ first suggested this post, ‘Hips’, ‘Calves’ and I all inwardly cringed, and screamed a silent NOOOOO!
Straight-leg, Bootcut, Skinny, Hi-rise, Mid-rise…
I find skinny-jeans not flattering on my figure. A bootcut, flare or even a straight-leg jean seems to balance out my curves more and is a hell of a lot more comfortable.
And so, it was with a huge sigh of relief, as I was researching the latest jean trends for this months fashion post, (Thank you @whowhatwear) I see-
The non-skinny jean trend has been spotted all over the ‘gram’.
This season is featuring the comeback of 70’s silhouettes. Yes that’s right—flares, boot-cut, and wide-leg styles and a waist-cinching hi-rise—thanks to designers such as Celine, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Gucci championing the trend on the runways.
Keep in mind, we are all 45+++ Midlife Women and while we like to appear fashionable, we tend to pick and choose from ‘trends’ these days. Nobody wants to appear as ‘mutton dressed as lamb.’
Ha! We’ll See, We just… might get lucky!
And so it was with a little trepidation: on my behalf, (as some Australian stores are a touch behind when it comes to the latest seasonal trends) but a ton of hope, that we all set off to find our ‘perfect jeans.’
We tried on a deluge of different styles and brands and here is what we found.
(For reference, I am Australian size 10-12 but always seem to be between sizes in jeans due to my body shape, Nella is a size 12 and Sarah is an 8-10).
Inside the Change-Room
It's Autumn here in Oz, but was still a humid 26-degree day today and was pretty hot in the change-room. Here we are eager, full of hope and raring to go! As well as the styles below, we also tried on a range of jeans from Myer and David Jones, however only a few made the cut:
Nella particularly liked the Amanda Straight Leg Jean by David Lawrence at $139 and Shelley thought the Levis 315 Shaping Bootcut $119.95 were worth mentioning, while another honourable mention went to David Lawrence's Skinny Leg Jean in Jackie $139.
Sophie Ankle Length Skinny Jeans - Ecru White $39
Product Details: The Sophie Skinny is a high rise stretch jean- that sits at the waist. The leg profile is fitted through the thigh, knee and ankle to create a skinny silhouette. We started off here early: it opened before everywhere else and to be honest, stocks a wide range of denim and jeans in varying styles: Bootcut, straight-leg, and the inevitable skinny-jean. Tried the white first and was a little too see-through for our taste. These were the skinny, ankle-length in Sophie normally $39 but on sale this week for $15. Sarah loved them and bought a pair. Also available in black distress, stay black, light-wash distressed, mid-wash blue and black snake (Sorry for the camera!)
Product Details: Comfort meets style with these high waisted skinny jeans from the Dannii Minogue Petites range! Dress them up or down with simple tweaks to your outfit for any occasion. The colour of these was a lovely dark wash which we all prefer to a lighter wash jean. Sarah and Nella thought they felt soft and comfortable. I am harder to convince. (But again, jeans are personally not my 'thing.') Sarah owns these and says they are definitely the most favourite pair of jeans in her closet (better than her 3 pairs of Sass and Bide jeans at $200 a pop). I will admit, they were probably the best skinnies I tried for the comfort factor. Also available in black, blue and white.
Product Details: The Tash girlfriend is a mid-rise jean that features a relaxed tapered leg profile. Finished with a double rolled hem with a cropped inseam and features five pockets and a zip fly. I actually thought these were rather soft and ultra-comfy for denim. (I love how all the ankle-length jeans were long for our little Nella!) They were not Sarah's fave, but again she didn't mind them either. I felt Nella looked great in every pair she tried and these were ankle length, were one of the only pair that would not require tailoring for her. Target does stock quite a few designs for the petite ladies. Also available in mid-wash blue distressed.
Product Details: The Shape Your Body Skinny is a super high rise stretch jean that sits just above the waist. The leg profile is fitted through the thigh, knee and ankle to create a skinny silhouette. The Shape Your Body Skinny is made from a performance stretch denim that sculpts the body creating a flattering shape, and features special tummy trimming construction in the front pockets. Honestly, you have to click on the pic below to see my face as I try to get these over my 'hips.' I think I dislocated my thumb- No, SERIOUSLY!! -. Again, I thought 'the girls' looked hot in these! They really liked them. Meanwhile, I will never attempt again! Also available in black and light wash.
Cotton/polyester and elastic. Zip fly with single-button closure. Yes, I guess they were comfy for a skinny-jean. But it is a No from me. These claim they continue to fade over time if you like that effect. They are also available in black, indigo (a dark navy wash) and white above.
For the ultimate in comfortable denim styling, the mid-wash blue wide-leg coveralls will be worn over and over again all year round. Jumpsuit styling, Rounded neckline with collar, Hidden zip down the front, Chest pockets, Cuffed cap sleeves, Removable tie waist belt with belt loops for support, Front and back pockets, Long leg length, Wide leg design, Cuffed hems, Breathable cotton fabrication, I loved this jumpsuit, it was by far the comfiest outfit of the entire day, but would I wear it, probably not in our hot Qld climate.
Below Frankie Wide Leg Full Length Jeans - Mid Wash Blue $39
Frankie Wide Leg is a cropped relaxed modern fit. Sitting tight and high on the waist, falling straight from hip to a wide ankle. Made from rigid or comfort stretch denim.
We found these to be ultra-comfortable for jeans, the three of us are not used to wearing a wide-leg, but I personally really liked these.
Also available in ecru white, and mid-wash and cropped in rinse-blue.
Jasmin Full-Length Bootleg Jeans - Mid Wash Blue $39
Product Details: The Jasmine Bootcut is a full-length bootcut style that is crafted from stretch denim. With a fitted profile from hip to thigh and a subtle kick from the knee to hem. Finished with five pockets and a zip-fly fastening, they're great for day dressing or for pairing with heels for a night out. These were by far my favourite jean of the day, although Sarah was not totally convinced as she prefers the Dannii Minogue Skinny-Jean. I felt these were much more flattering to my curves. Also available in black.
So did we find the perfect jean: Sarah’s pick – Target Dannii Minogue Petites Highwaist Skinny Jean in Indigo; Shelley’s pick (No, I still haven’t found the ‘perfect’ jean) went to Frankie Wide-leg Full-Length Jean purely for the comfort factor, and Nella’s were the Amanda Straight Leg Jean from David Lawrence at Myer.
